  1. Valentino wanted to save TV boy because he thinks that the crazy things he did was not by his intention. The TV boy has not experienced much crucial events Valentino experienced. William K's ability to suspend belife will help Valentino later on since his ideas gave Valentino a pre-caution that told him how might he treat his situation in the future and gave him the idea on how others will comment about his situations in the future. Valentino hears the story of What is the What in two versions because his father "altered the story to protect the feelings of Sadiq and the other traders." The SPLA took over Valentino's father's store because the SPLA's primary goal was to acquire as much goods as possible and to destroy the place. This idea is evident under the fact that the SPLA lefted the area just after they stoled and wiped out everything.

  2. There are two different stories because his father alters the real story of the cattle and the What because of who he is talking to. His father alters the ending of the story so he would not offend Sadiq and the other traders, who are Arab. There are two different groups in the story, the Arabs and the Dinka. In the real story the Arabs are made to look inferior to the Dinka because they were confused people that were bad herdsmen and did not understand the value of the cattle.

  3. Valentino wants to save TV boy because he recognizes that he is only a victim of the people that robbed his house. Valentino thinks that Michael just wants to be a boy but is being held captive and used. He understands that his youth is being wasted just like the boys he walked with during his trip to Ethiopia. Valentino sees himself in TV boy.

    1. Why does Valentino want to save TV boy?
    a. Valentino wants to save TV boy, or Michael, because he sees better for him. He is but a product of his environment and he says Michael reminds him of himself. Valentino tries to talk with Michael numerous times, trying not to loose faith in this boy. He feels that this boy can still be saved and this one act of kindness will propel him forward. The way to get this kindness out of Michael is to tell his own story, which is what he tries to do.

    2. How do you think William K’s ability to suspend belief will help Valentino later on?
    a. William K’s ability to suspend belief helps Valentino later on when they are walking through the desert. William depicts a land of pure bounty with oranges and endless food and water, parents to take the orphans and homes to live in. It is ideas and visions like this that help Valentino make it through his long days in the desert.

    3. Valentino hears the story of what is the what. Why are there two different stories?
    a. There are two different stories because Valentino’s dad does not want to offend his friends. In one story, the Arab’s are “dumb” and would be offended with this version of the story. Because he is telling the story to his Arab friends he changes the story to avoid offending his friends.

    4. Why are the SPLA taking over Valentino’s father’s store? What role does Khartoum play in this?
    a. The SPLA took over Valentions fathers store because they needed things to feed the rebel army. Their reasoning was that if you are not for the army in doing anything and everything you can to help it that you are against it and therefore a threat and should be killed.

  6. -Valentino wants to save TV boy because Valentino recognizes a similar situation between them. Valentino believes that TV boy does not want to be a part of the burglary, but because TV boy is somehow related to the two older robbers, TV boy is helplessly a part of their team. Valentino recalls his childhood and begins to feel sorry for the TV boy because he believes that both of them need to be treated better. Hence, Valentino imagines taking the boy and leaving Atlanta.

-William K’s ability to suspend belief may help Valentino in the process of moving to United States. I was told that United States received letters from individuals around the world that explain their extreme situations. A group of people who receive these letters go through and decide which situations calls for an immediate response and then help the people by allowing them to live in the U.S.

-The original version of the story was the one Valentino heard from his father. However, his father, Deng Arou, tells a different version at the table because he is considering the Arabs sitting around the table. Deng Arou conducts business with some of the Arabs and also there has been an underlying tension between the Dinka and the Arabs, hence, calling it safe, Deng avoids a quarrel by excluding the detail that Arabs were given the “what” and thus are inferior to the Dinka.

-The SPLA are taking over Deng Arou’s store because they need supplies to support the rebels. Khartoum is supposed to protect the people who are not involved, but because of hatred toward the rebels and rising suspicion, everyone in Marial Bai is assumed to be an alliance with the SPLA and therefore is treated without mercy. At the same time, SPLA terrorize Marial Bai because of suspicion that the people are helping the government soldiers.

  7. 1. Why does Valentino want to save TV boy?
He wants to save TV boy because he sees their situations are very similar. They both have had their childhoods stripped from them, and TV boy is a victim of the robbers.
    2. How do you think William K’s ability to suspend belief will help Valentino later on?
William K's ability to suspend belief and his exaggerations keep Valentino motivated. No matter what situation Valentino is faced with, even walking through the scorching desert, he pushes through it.
    3. Valentino hears the story of What is the What. Why are there two different stories?
There are two different stories because Valentino's father decides to alter the ending because of the Arab company. In the real story, the Arabs are depicted as a lesser group than the Dinka's in the eyes of God. The Arabs, "Did not understand the value of cattle."
    4. Why are the SPLA taking over Valentino’s father’s store? What role does Khartoum play in this? Valentino's store is taken over by the SPLA because they wanted to recruit and take what they needed for their army. Kourtoum is where men who worked for the government took their families when in need of a safe place to stay.

1."Why does Valentino want to save TV boy?"
Valentino feels compelled to save the TV boy because he reminds him of himself. The TV boy has a corrupt childhood, similarly, to what happened to Valentino. Valentino believes that the TV boy acts this way because it is all he has seen. Valentino wants to show the TV boy the good in the world, and hopefully with Valentino's help he will enable the TV boy to be kind.

2."How do you think William K’s ability to suspend belief will help Valentino later on?"
William K's ability to suspend belief helps Valentino later on because it provides Valentino with hope. For example, while they walk through the hot desert William K depicts a land bountiful with food, water, and parents. This image allows Valentino to keep going and believing they are walking towards something better.

3."Valentino hears the story of What is the What. Why are there two different stories?"
There are two different stories because when Valentino's father tells the story he changes the end. The end of the original story would be offensive to his Arab friends, and at the time when his father is telling the story the Arabs and the Dinkas were still friends.

    4. "Why are the SPLA taking over Valentino’s father’s store? What role does Khartoum play in this?"
The SPLA is taking over Valentino's father's store because they need supplies and food to provide for the rebel army. Supporting the rebel army is crucial so that you are not accused of being against the rebel army. Khartoum is the area where judges, clerks, etc took their families too after the soldiers charged with protecting the village from raids and violence left Marial Bai.

Valentino thinks that Michael just wants to be a boy but is being held captive and used. He understands that his youth is being wasted just like the boys he walked with during his trip to Ethiopia. Valentino sees himself in TV boy.

I think Valentino will find motivation in William's stories that stretch the truth because it provides him with hope when everything and everyone around him is falling apart.

There are two different stories because his father alters the real story of the cattle and the What because of who he is talking to. Why does Valentino want to save TV boy?
Hew ants to save the TV boy because he sees that they are in similar situations and can relate to him. They both have had difficult childhoods and the TV boy is a victim of the robbers. He is used and is captive to the robbers. He understands that this boy’s youth has been difficult, just like his own. He sees himself in him and by telling him his own story Valentino thinks he can help him not lose faith. Valentino wants to guide him, and show him kindness and goodness in the world, and because of his horrible examples set by surroundings and family, which is all he knows.
How do you think William K’s ability to suspend belief will help Valentino later on?
William ability to suspend belief often tells improbable tales and exaggerations to keep Valentino motivated. No matter what situation arises, even through walking through the hot desert, he pushes through it.
Valentino hears the story of what is the what. Why are there two different stories?
There are two different stories because Valentinos father decides to change/alter the story because of the audience. He changes the end of the story so he would not offend the Sadiq and other traders who are Arab. In the real story, they were inferior to the Dinka because they were confused (dumb) people that had bad herdsmen and did not understand the value of cattle.
Why are the SPLA taking over Valentino’s fathers store? What role does Khartoum play in this?
They took it over to get as many goods as possible and they needed things to feed the army. They wanted to destroy the place and this is evident under the fact that they left the area after they had ruined and wiped out everything. They did this because if one isn’t helping out the army in doing everything they can then they are worthless and do not deserve to live. Supporting the rebel army is extremely important so you are not accused of otherwise. Khartoum is the place that is supposed to protect families of people who work for the government and gave them a place to stay.

    p. 62-63- Valentino hears the story of What is the What. Why are there two different stories?
Two different stories are told involving the What because when Valentino’s father is telling the story, he is at the dinner table where the Arabs are present and does not want to offend his friends. Valentino probably feels that he was forced into what he was doing. The boy is obviously frightened by Valentino. After all, he decided to drop books on his head and made a makeshift shield off so he couldn't see him. Valentino feels that he is not to blame for his actions, and sympathizes with him.

    1. Valentino wants to save TV Boy because he is being forced into doing something that is immoral and wrong. He wants the boy to see that he is doing wrong, not so that he can let him go but to teach this child a lesson before he his harmed by these actions forced upon him.

    2. William K's ability to suspend belief helps Valentino to persevere many of the obstacles which he will encounter in his journey across Africa. Also, since his stories can be so ridiculously false, he would find humor and was able to take his mind off pressing issues that caused him to become depressed and sad.

    3. There are two different stories of "What is The What" because during a meeting with Arab's, Valentino's father is forced to tell a refined version of the story in order to not offend his Arabic acquaintances. In the true version of the story, various derogatory and Anti-Arabic phrases and hints can be seen.

    4. The SPLA went into their store because they were in need of supplies and knew that they could get whatever they wanted in an area where many feared their presence. Khartoum was a safe area for government workers and others to continue on with their lives in a safe manner.

This will allow him to keep going through the hardships he is facing and that there are many other people who go through different types of difficulties to survive. In reality he ended up changing the end of the story (making it two) not to offend the Arabs. They were inferior to the Dinka because they did not realize how much the cattle were worth and how much it had represented. It was Gods test in which the Dinka proved to be superior.
