a. Valentino’s dream is referred to as the “River Dream” and it refers to him trying to teach and save all the boys he knows or has met. He tries to teach them all while they are all struggling and drowning in the river. He has to dive down into the water and save them all one by one by sending them to the surface. He explains this dream by saying that, “I was responsible for the next line of boys. We were all reading water together, and I was meant to teach.” This idea makes him feel driven and troubled at the same time.
2. When the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were bombed, there was hope again that the US would help the boys. How does one continue to hope in a situation like this?
a. Knowledge is power and is also the key that gives these boys hope. When the boys learn about how all-major powers in the world are connected through a intricate web of money, power and oil they learn their place in the world. They also learn that Sudan has been helping Osama Bin Laden who was responsible for the bombing. Learning this they believe that this bombing will focus the world’s attention to the problems in Sudan and therefore recognize the problems going on and be more inclined to help.
3. During their visit to Nairobi, Tabitha wants to escape but Valentino doesn’t. Why didn’t he escape in Nairobi?
a. Tabitha’s reasoning is that Mike and Grace, their hosts, wanted them to escape which is why they left them alone. Tabitha wants to live a free life like them where they are educated and have many rights and don’t live in fear. Valentino says he cannot because he doesn’t believe that Mike and Grace wanted them to leave. He reasons this by saying that they would be worried if they ran away and call the police and immigration officials. Not only would this worry Mike and Grace but it would also ruin future “field trips” for refugees

His “river dream” always caused Valentino to wake up troubled, yet driven. He took the role of multiple people in this dream, including himself, his teacher, Mr. Kondit, and Dut. Valentino was trying to teach the young boys in the river. The dream would mostly take place under the “coffee-colored water” because the boys could not tread water. Even with such a task, he felt determined to teach.

When the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were bombed, people stopped working, all activities were postponed, thousands were injured and hundreds were dead. People kept themselves hidden for days. However, there was hope the US would help the boys again. The boys learn that each country is connected somehow by wealth and power. In addition, they learned that Osama Bin Laden initiated the bombing and that Sudan had been a part of this bombing as well. With that being said, the boys had hope that individuals would focus more on helping the problems that lie in Sudan.

Tabitha wants to escape because she wants to be liberated just like their hosts, Mike and Grace. Valentino, on the other hand, mentions that he cannot escape because he believes Mike and Grace would be worried about him if he left.

In Valentino dreams he is teaching the young lost boys to swim through a river, but he is also bringing them back up from the bottom of the river floor. In doing this, Valentino is responsible for teaching and saving these boys and providing them with hope throughout this difficult task. This dream represents how Valentino feels his role in reality is; he feels he is responsible for protecting and teaching his fellow lost boys.

The boys continue to hope in a situation like this because it brings attention to their country, and the corruption going on in the country. When something horrible like bombings happens to countries in power (the US) the world pays attention and the news is focussed on the issues in that area. Valentino explains, "And a series of bombings brought us, we thought, to the forefront of the world's mind".

Tabitha wants to escape because she longs to be free like their hosts Mike and Grace. Her belief is that they left her and Valentino alone so they would have the opportunity to escape and live freely like them. Valentino disagrees with Tabitha and that is why he doesn't escape. Valentino does not believe that Mike and Grace left so that him and Tabitha could escape; instead Valentino believes that if he and Tabitha were to escape Mike and Grace would become worried and frantic at where they went.

The dream is symbolic of him trying to teach all the boy he has come into contact with throughout his journey and how he trys to “save” them

Well they continue to hope through there newfound knowledge of how the major countries of the world are connected through money/wealth and oil. They also learned that osama bin laden was behind these bombings with help from the sudan and now that the worls eyes were on the sudan. these events drew American interest and could once more mabye bring the U.S. in to do something about the conflicts in sudan.

Tabitha wants to escape because she wants to live a better life, and feel the same freedoms and liberties that hosts, mike and grace feel. But Valentino feels that mike and grace would not want them to flee elsewhere because they would worry about them too much.

I believe that this “river dream” that Valentino always dreams about means that it is now Valentino’s job to bring awareness and show these boys a new life. Valentino becomes Mr. Kondit not only to teach English verb forms but because Valentino is sharing and teaching these young boys about his painful past and what they could do to overcome these hardships. When Valentino goes underwater to save each and every person it shows that he is helping/saving these boys from their suffering and to lead them to a brighter future.

In situations like this where one has no say or rights to decide anything, one can continue to hope by trusting others around them. Others like the US who has the power and potential to save vulnerable countries.

ReplyDeleteThis reoccurring "river dream" that Valentino seems to have nearly once a month is symbolic in that he is attempting to teach the boys. In the dream he is a combination of himself, his teacher, Mr. Kondit, and Dut floating in a river Gilo and his home Marial Bai. This dream displays his responsibility to teach the young boys english and guide them through their hardships to a better future despite obstacles.

When the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were bombed, Kenyans stopped working, hundreds were left dead, and nearly five thousand were injured. It was learned that the bombings were responsible by Sudan and Osama Bin Laden. One can continue to hope in a situation such as this because strong nations such as the United States can be depended on to reverse these tragedies, protect innocent lives, and prevent somethings like this to happen again.

During their visit to Nairobi, Tabitha wants to ecape from their hosts Mike and Grace because she yearns to have the freedoms that others around her enjoy. But, Valentino doesn't want to leave because he fears that Mike and Valentino will fret upon discovering their disappearance and worry about their whereabouts.

ReplyDeleteThe river dream is a symbolic dream. In this dream he is a combination of a few people. In the reoccuring dream, he is always trying to save the boys. I think this means that he wants to be able to save the boys from the hardships they are going through.

The war left millions without work, without homes and some without lives. People can have hope because they look to larger countries such as the United States to bring aid. In many ways they have such as the Invisible Children Organization.

- The "river dream" that Valentino continuously haves ends up keeping him from his rest. The dream has Valentino juggling the roles of multiple people while trying to save and teach the boys that he knows in the river. The dream shows the balance of the rewards trying to teach them English while also making sure they stay alive. This makes the dream troubling for him because they are important tasks that he feels responsible for.

- There was hope in this sort of situation because the bombings were blamed on bin Laden and Sudan had helped him so therefor Sudan would pay and attention would be turned towards Sudan. They thought that this would lead to the government finally finding bin Laden. Now that they have the United States looking for bin Laden they will have the aid of a bigger and stronger country such as the United States

1. The dream that Valentino continues to have regularly, is about him taking on the roles of other people and teaching boys he has known throughout his life. He teaches them as they all tread water. When the boys sink below the coffee colored water, Valentino saves them one by one. This dream may symbolize the role Valentino believes he has as a member of the lost boys. When a powerful country such as the U.S. becomes involved, worldwide attention is brought to the situation. One can still have hope if they believe that the attention will bring forth help. People can hope that problems such as the ones related to Osama Bin Laden will be resolved.
3. Valentino does not want to escape to Nairobi because he feels as though MIke and Grace, their hosts, would not want them to. He feel as if Mike and Grace would worry about them and call the immigration authorities to discover their whereabouts. Valentino's opinion is opposite to Tabitha because Tabitha wants to go to Nairobi to live a better life and experience the freedom that Mike and Grace have.

ReplyDeleteValentino referred the dream as the river dream that keeps him awake when he tries to sleep. He describes that, “in the dream I was many people in the way in a dream one can be many people at once.” He put his feet in the shoes of many different people. The river was his home, Marial Bai, and there were many boys along the river in which he knew. I think this dream represents a state of comfort and a drive towards what he wants in life to be normal. He wants to go back home to the place he knew and the people he lived with. In the dream it also seems as if he saves the other boys who are under water and lets them see what he sees.

When the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were bombed, all activity had ceased and people went into hiding. Hundreds had died from this and people had watched others being carried out. It is discussed in the book that Sudan and Osama had both initiated and carried out these bombings. In a situation like this one continues to hope that the United States would save them from atrocities like this and save the problems that lie within their society. They hope that the US will help save the innocent people that are subjected to these bombings.

Valentino believes that Mike and Grace, their hosts, do not want them to leave. Also if they were to leave, he believes, that they would call the police on them. Tabitha wanted to escape because she reasons that their hosts wanted them to leave and she wants to go somewhere where she can be liberated and be free like them. Ultimately Valentino disagrees with Tabitha and he decides that he does not want to escape in Nairobi.

2. When the United states of any other superpower would get involved in this conflict, the world would become aware of its need to be aided. Therefore, people from Sudan felt that the U.S. would help now that they are aware of the problems that were occuring in Sudan.
3. Valentino did not escape because he felt that their hosts were not ready to let them leave. He fel that if they attempted to leave, the authorities would have been called to come and find them.

a. Valentino’s dream consists of him saving all the boys form dying at the bottom of the river and teaching them how swim. He takes on roles of himself, Dut, and his teacher in this dream, and it shows him that his life’s goal is to teach young boys about the necessities to live, and provide them with the skills required to survive and live successful lives.
2. When the US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania were bombed, there was hope again that the US would help the boys. How does one continue to hope in a situation like this?
a. There was hope that the US would help the boys because they hoped it would bring attention to Sudan, and the atrocities occurring there. The boys learn that all countries are interconnected through a web of power and money, and they know that the US had the power to save them, and now motive as well. They learn of Bin Laden’s involvement in the bombings, and they hope that the US will provide them with rescue while capturing the forces behind the attacks.

a. While Tabitha wants to escape because she wants freedom, Valentino thinks that Mike and Grace would be nervous and wonder where they were. He does not want to worry his hosts.

ReplyDeleteValentino’s dream means that he feels responsible for the lost boys. He was trying to teach, take care, and save the boys. He felt responsible for these boys, and was rescuing them. He said, “I would see a boy and would position myself under him, placing my hands under his arms, and then I would lift him upward” (410). He feels determined to save and take care of these children. He feels an obligation to help lost boys and to teach them.

In this situation, instead of thinking of all the terror that was happening, the people thought of the attention that Sudan would be getting. Attention on Sudan would mean attention on them, which could help them get help.

-Valentino told Tabitha he could not run. He said he didn’t agree that Mike and Grace expected them to leave that night. He believed that they would be greatly troubled by their disappearance, that it would bring them a lot of trouble from police and immigration officials. Their defecting would also, he reminded Tabitha, put an end to all sanctioned refugee excursions from Kakuma. Their trip to Nairobi would be the last any youth from Kakuma would ever make. Valentino simply didn’t think this was the right way.

-Valentino is a helpful character who will support his fellow companions when they fall and lose all hope to “float back to the surface”.
ReplyDelete-Valentino and the other boys had high expectations of the U.S. because they believed that U.S. had all the power in a war. Based on previous intervention of U.S. it was assumed by the boys that because previous conflicts were quickly resolved after U.S. took charge, their issue will too be taken care of by the U.S.
-Valentino is a considerate man who does not abuse kind privileges people offer. Tabitha, as Valentino mentions has a selfish attitude as she tries to convince Valentino that they should run away and create a better life that both of them deserve. Valentino nonetheless does not want to disappoint Mike and Grace and furthermore considers future trips for other Sudanese to Nairobi. If Valentino and Tabitha and some more Sudanese who also came on the trip were to escape, future field trips to Nairobi, a beautiful place compared to Kakuma, will not be allowed, thus, depriving future drama students of such a beautiful experience.
